OBJECTIVES: Empty nose syndrome (ENS) is an underdiagnosed but burdensome clinical condition. Studies that have addressed the impact of remnant inferior turbinate volume (ITV) on ENS are scarce. We aimed to evaluate the impact of ITV and phenotyping on the severity and presentation of ENS. METHODS: All the enrolled patients underwent the following subjective assessments: the ENS 6-Item Questionnaire (ENS6Q), Sino-Nasal Outcome Test-25 (SNOT-25), Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). The ITV was obtained from finely cut (1-mm-thick slices) sino-nasal computed tomography scan images and analyzed using ImageJ. The correlation between ITV, subjective measurements, and morphology of inferior turbinates was evaluated. ENS was categorized as torpedo type (balanced tissue volume) or pistol type (posterior dominance) based on the morphology. RESULTS: Overall, 54 patients met the inclusion criteria. The ITV was positively correlated with the ENS6Q score and domain of ENS symptoms in SNOT-25. Neither BDI-II nor BAI scores had a significant correlation with ITV. Based on their morphological classification, the torpedo type exhibited diverse manifestations in the SNOT-25 analysis in response to changes in ITV, while the pistol type demonstrated an elevated rhinologic symptom burden and ENS-specific symptoms as their ITV increased. Nasal resistance did not correlate with the ITV in either type of ENS. CONCLUSIONS: Symptoms were paradoxically worse in ENS patients with greater remnant ITV, and distinct morphological phenotypes in the nasal cavities may result in different presentations. Further investigation into the correlation between remnant inferior turbinates and nerve function is warranted. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: 3 Laryngoscope, 2024.

The presence of oral microbes in extra-oral sites is linked to gastrointestinal cancers. However, their potential ectopically colonization in the nasopharynx and impact on local cancer development remains uncertain. Our study involving paired nasopharyngeal-oral microbial samples from nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients and controls unveils an aberrant oral-to-nasopharyngeal microbial translocation associated with increased NPC risk (OR = 4.51, P = 0.012). Thirteen species are classified as oral-translocated and enriched in NPC patients. Among these, Fusobacterium nucleatum and Prevotella intermedia are validated through culturomics and clonal strain identification. Nasopharyngeal biopsy meta-transcriptomes confirm these microbes within tumors, influencing local microenvironment and cytokine response. These microbes correlate significantly with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) loads in the nasopharynx, exhibiting an increased dose-response relationship. Collectively, our study identifies oral microbes migrating to the nasopharynx, infiltrating tumors, impacting microenvironments and linking with EBV infection. These results enhance our understanding of abnormal microbial communication and their roles in carcinogenesis.

Severe soft tissue infections caused by Aeromonas dhakensis, such as necrotizing fasciitis or cellulitis, are prevalent in southern Taiwan and around the world. However, the mechanism by which A. dhakensis causes tissue damage remains unclear. Here, we found that the haemolysin Ahh1, which is the major virulence factor of A. dhakensis, causes cellular damage and activates the NLR family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome signalling pathway. Deletion of ahh1 significantly downregulated caspase-1, the proinflammatory cytokine interleukin 1ß (IL-1ß) and gasdermin D (GSDMD) and further decreased the damage caused by A. dhakensis in THP-1 cells. In addition, we found that knockdown of the NLRP3 inflammasome confers resistance to A. dhakensis infection in both THP-1 NLRP3-/- cells and C57BL/6 NLRP3-/- mice. In addition, we demonstrated that severe soft-tissue infections treated with antibiotics combined with a neutralizing antibody targeting IL-1ß significantly increased the survival rate and alleviated the degree of tissue damage in model mice compared control mice. These findings show that antibiotics combined with therapies targeting IL-1ß are potential strategies to treat severe tissue infections caused by toxin-producing bacteria.

Sialic acid (SA) is a naturally occurring monosaccharide found in glycoproteins and glycolipids. Changes in the expression of SA are associated with several diseases; thus, the detection of SA is of great significance for biological research, cancer diagnosis, and treatment. Boronic acid analogs have emerged as a promising tool for detecting sugars such as SA due to its reversible covalent bonding ability. In this study, 11 bis-boronic acid compounds and 2 mono-boronic acid compounds were synthesized via a highly efficient Ugi-4CR strategy. The synthesized compounds were subjected to affinity fluorescence binding experiments to evaluate their binding capability to SA. Compound A1 was shown to have a promising binding constant of 2602 ± 100 M-1 at pH = 6.0. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations examining the binding modes between A1 and SA indicated that the position of the boronic acid functional group was strongly correlated with its interaction with SA's α-hydroxy acid unit. The DFT calculations were consistent with the observations from the fluorescence experiments, demonstrating that the number and relative positions of the boronic acid functional groups are critical factors in enhancing the binding affinity to SA. DFT calculations of both S and R configuration of A1 indicated that the effect of the S/R configuration of A1 on its binding with ß-sialic acid was insignificant as the Ugi-4CR generated racemic products. A fluorine atom was incorporated into the R2 substituent of A1 as an electron-withdrawing group to produce A5, which possessed a significantly higher capability to bind to SA (Keq = 7015 ± 5 M-1 at pH = 6.0). Finally, A1 and A5 were shown to possess exceptional binding selectivity toward ß-sialic acid under pH of 6.0 and 6.5 while preferring to bind with glucose, fructose, and galactose under pH of 7.0 and 7.5.

IMPORTANCE: This paper illuminates the significant question of how the oral commensal Fusobacterium nucleatum adapts to the metabolically changing environments of several extra-oral sites such as placenta and colon to promote various diseases as an opportunistic pathogen. We demonstrate here that the highly conserved Rhodobacter nitrogen-fixation complex, commonly known as Rnf complex, is key to fusobacterial metabolic adaptation and virulence. Genetic disruption of this Rnf complex causes global defects in polymicrobial interaction, biofilm formation, cell growth and morphology, hydrogen sulfide production, and ATP synthesis. Targeted metabolomic profiling demonstrates that the loss of this respiratory enzyme significantly diminishes catabolism of numerous amino acids, which negatively impacts fusobacterial virulence as tested in a preterm birth model in mice.

Chiral organosilanes are valuable chemical entities in the development of functional organic materials, asymmetric catalysis, and medicinal chemistry. As an important strategy for constructing chiral organosilanes, the asymmetric functionalization of the Si-CAryl bond typically relies on transition-metal catalysis. Herein, we present an efficient method for atroposelective synthesis of biaryl siloxane atropisomers via organocatalytic Si-C bond functionalization of dinaphthosiloles with silanol nucleophiles. The reaction proceeds through an asymmetric protonation and simultaneous Si-C bond cleavage/silanolysis sequence in the presence of a newly developed chiral Brønsted acid catalyst. The versatile nature of the Si-C bond streamlines the derivatization of axially chiral products into other functional atropisomers, thereby expanding the applicability of this method.

A prominent oral commensal and opportunistic pathogen, Fusobacterium nucleatum can traverse to extra-oral sites such as placenta and colon, promoting adverse pregnancy outcomes and colorectal cancer, respectively. How this anaerobe sustains many metabolically changing environments enabling its virulence potential remains unclear. Informed by our genome-wide transposon mutagenesis, we report here that the highly conserved Rnf complex, encoded by the rnfCDGEAB gene cluster, is key to fusobacterial metabolic adaptation and virulence. Genetic disruption of the Rnf complex via non-polar, in-frame deletion of rnfC (Δ rnfC ) abrogates polymicrobial interaction (or coaggregation) associated with adhesin RadD and biofilm formation. The defect in coaggregation is not due to reduced cell surface of RadD, but rather an increased level of extracellular lysine, which binds RadD and inhibits coaggregation. Indeed, removal of extracellular lysine via washing Δ rnfC cells restores coaggregation, while addition of lysine inhibits this process. These phenotypes mirror that of a mutant (Δ kamAΔ ) that fails to metabolize extracellular lysine. Strikingly, the Δ rnfC mutant is defective in ATP production, cell growth, cell morphology, and expression of the enzyme MegL that produces hydrogen sulfide from cysteine. Targeted metabolic profiling demonstrated that catabolism of many amino acids, including histidine and lysine, is altered in Δ rnfC cells, thereby reducing production of ATP and metabolites including H2S and butyrate. Most importantly, we show that the Δ rnfC mutant is severely attenuated in a mouse model of preterm birth. The indispensable function of Rnf complex in fusobacterial pathogenesis via modulation of bacterial metabolism makes it an attractive target for developing therapeutic intervention.

Primary central nervous system germ cell tumors (CNS GCTs) are part of the GCTs in children and adults. This tumor entity presents with geographic variation, age, and sex predilection. There are two age peaks of incidence distribution at the first few months of life and in adolescence. CNS GCTs are heterogeneous in histopathological subtypes, locations, and tumor marker (AFP, ß-hCG) secretions. In the WHO CNS tumor classification, GCTS are classified as germinoma and nongerminomatous GCT (NGGCT) with different subtypes (including teratoma). Excluding mature teratoma, the remaining NGGCTs are malignant (NGMGCT). In teratoma, growing teratoma syndrome and teratoma with somatic-type malignancy should be highlighted. The common intracranial locations are pineal region, neurohypophysis (NH), bifocal pineal-NH, basal ganglia, and cerebral ventricle. Above 50% of intracranial GCTs (IGCTs) present obstructive hydrocephalus. Spinal tumors are rare. Age, locations, hydrocephalus, and serum/CSF titer of ß-hCG correlate with clinical manifestations. Delayed diagnosis is common in tumors arising in neurohypophysis, bifocal, and basal ganglia resulting in the increasing of physical dysfunction and hormonal deficits. Staging work-up includes CSF cytology for tumor cells and contrast-enhanced MRI of brain and spine for macroscopic metastasis before treatment commences. The therapeutic approach of CNS GCTs integrates locations, histopathology, staging, tumor marker level, and therapeutic classification. Treatment strategies include surgical biopsy/excision, chemotherapy, radiotherapy (single or combination). Secreting tumors with consistent imaging may not require histopathological diagnosis. Primary germinomas are highly radiosensitive and the therapeutic aim is to maintain high survival rate using optimal radiotherapy regimen with/without chemotherapy combination. Primary NGNGCTs are less radiosensitive. The therapeutic aim is to increase survival utilizing more intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The negative prognostic factors are residue disease at the end of treatment and serum or CSF AFP level >1000 ng/mL at diagnosis. In refractory or recurrent NMGGCTs, besides high-dose chemotherapy, new therapy is necessary. Molecular profiling and analysis help for translational research. Survivors of pediatric brain tumors frequently experience cancer-related cognitive dysfunction, physical disability, pituitary hormone deficiency, and other CNS complications after cranial radiotherapy. Continuous surveillance and assessment may lead to improvements in treatment protocols, transdisciplinary interventions, after-treatment rehabilitation, and quality of life.

Background: Aspergillus fumigatus-specific immunoglobulin G (Af-sIgG) has been applied to diagnose allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, a hypersensitivity reaction to the colonization of the fungus in the lower airways. In the upper airways, it has been reported to be involved in allergic fungal rhinosinusitis and local fungal rhinosinusitis. However, in primary chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), a more common upper airway disease, the role of Af-sIgG remains unclear. Objective: The aim of our study was to investigate the role of serum Af-sIgG levels in primary CRS patients. Methods: We prospectively recruited patients diagnosed with bilateral primary CRS and patients with nasal septal deviation as the non-CRS group. Patients in the primary CRS group were further classified into two endotypes, including type 2 (T2) and non-T2 groups. Serum samples collected were sent for Af-sIgG analysis. Potential factors and surgical outcomes were analyzed. Results: Forty-eight patients with a diagnosis of primary CRS (including 28 with T2 and 20 with non-T2 CRS) and 22 patients in the non-CRS group were recruited. The T2 CRS group had significantly higher serum Af-sIgG levels than the non-T2 CRS group (odds ratio 10.2 with Af-sIgG more than 27.6 mg/L; p < 0.001). Further multivariate logistic regression showed that the serum Af-sIgG level was the independent factor for early disease recurrence within one year in primary CRS patients. The optimal cutoff value of the serum Af-sIgG level to predict postoperative recurrence was 27.1 mg/L (odds ratio 15.1, p = 0.013). Conclusions: We suggest that the serum Af-sIgG level is a practical marker to detect T2 inflammation and the surgical outcome of primary CRS. By applying this feasible test, we may be able to achieve optimal treatment for every individual with primary CRS. This study may provide physicians with a reference for future clinical applications in dealing with primary CRS.

BACKGROUND: To investigate whether whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT) decreases lymphocyte counts and evaluate the impact of treatment-related lymphopenia on survival in patients with brain metastasis. METHODS: Medical records from 60 small-cell lung cancer patients treated with WBRT from January 2010 to December 2018 were included in the study. Total lymphocyte count (TLC) was obtained pre and post treatment (within 1 month). We performed linear and logistic regression analyses to identify predictors of lymphopenia. The association between lymphopenia and survival was analyzed using Cox regression analysis. RESULTS: Thirty-nine patients (65%) developed treatment-related lymphopenia. The median TLC decrease was -374 cells/µL (interquartile range -50 to -722, p < 0.001). Baseline lymphocyte count was a significant predictor of TLC difference and percentage change in TLC. Logistic regression analysis found male sex (odds ratio [OR] 0.11, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.00-0.79, p = 0.033) and higher baseline lymphocyte count (OR 0.91, 95% CI 0.82-0.99, p = 0.005) were associated with a lower risk of developing ≥grade 2 treatment-related lymphopenia. Cox regression analysis showed that age at brain metastasis (hazard ratio [HR] 1.03, 95% CI 1.01-1.05, p = 0.013), ≥grade 2 treatment-related lymphopenia, and percentage change in TLC (per 10%, HR 0.94, 95% CI 0.89-0.99, p = 0.032) were prognostic factors of survival. CONCLUSIONS: WBRT decreases TLC and the magnitude of treatment-related lymphopenia is an independent predictor of survival in small-cell lung cancer patients.

Meningiomas are the most frequently diagnosed primary intracranial tumors in adults. Surgical resection is preferred if the meningioma is accessible; for those that are not suitable for surgical resection, radiotherapy should be considered to improve local tumor control. However, recurrent meningiomas are challenging to treat, as the recurrent tumor might be located in the previously irradiated area. Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) is a highly selective radiotherapy modality in which the cytotoxic effect focuses mainly on cells with increased uptake of boron-containing drugs. In this article, we describe four patients with recurrent meningiomas treated with BNCT in Taiwan. The mean boron-containing drug tumor-to-normal tissue uptake ratio was 4.125, and the tumor mean dose was 29.414 GyE, received via BNCT. The treatment response showed two stable diseases, one partial response, and one complete response. We also introduce and support the effectiveness and safety of BNCT as an alternative salvage treatment for recurrent meningiomas.

(1) Background: A well-established Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) facility includes many essential systems, which are the epithermal neutron beam system, on-line monitoring system (OMS), QA/QC (quality assurance or quality control) system, boron concentration (BC) measurement system, and treatment planning system (TPS). Accurate data transmission, monitoring, and deposition among these systems are of vital importance before, during, and after clinical, animal, and cell BNCT irradiation. This work developed a novel integrated platform NeuTHOR Station (NeuTHORS) for BNCT at Tsing Hua Open-pool Reactor (THOR). Apart from the data of the OMS and QA/QC system, the data of BC and TPS can be loaded on NeuTHORS before BNCT clinical, animal, and cell irradiation. (2) Methods: A multi-paradigm computer programming language c# (c sharp) was used to develop the integrated platform NeuTHORS. The design of NeuTHORS is based on the standard procedures of BNCT treatment or experiment at THOR. Moreover, parallel testing with OMS-BNCT (the former OMS) and QA/QC of THOR was also performed for more than 70 times to verify the validation of NeuTHORS. (3) Results: According to the comparisons of the output, NeuTHORS and OMS-BNCT and QA/QC of THOR show very good consistency. NeuTHORS is now installed on an industrial PC (IPC) and successfully performs the monitoring of BNCT Treatment at THOR. Patients' f BC and TPS data are also input into NeuTHORS and stored on IPC through an internal network from BC measurement room and TPS physicist. Therefore, the treatment data of each patient can be instantaneously established after each BNCT treatment for further study on BNCT. NeuTHORS can also be applied on data acquisition for a BNCT-related study, especially for animal or cell irradiation experiments. (4) Conclusions: A novel integrated platform NeuTHOR Station for monitoring BNCT clinical treatment and animal and cell irradiation study has been successfully established at THOR. With this platform, BNCT radiobiology investigations will be efficiently performed and a thorough data storage and analysis system of BNCT treatments or experiments can thus be systematically built up for the further investigation of BNCT at THOR.

Oral hygiene and the alteration of the oral microbiome have been linked to nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). This study aimed to investigate whether the oral microbiome plays a mediating role in the relationship between oral hygiene and NPC, and identify differential microbial taxonomies that potentially mediated this association. We conducted a case-control study that involved 218 NPC patients and 192 healthy controls. The 16S rRNA gene sequencing of the V4 region was performed to evaluate the composition of the oral microbiome. Mediation analysis was applied to explore the relationship among oral hygiene, the oral microbiome and NPC. We found that dental fillings and poor oral hygiene score were associated with increased risks of NPC (OR = 2.51 (1.52-4.25) and OR = 1.54 (1.02-2.33)). Mediation analysis indicated that dental fillings increased the risk of NPC by altering the abundance of Erysipelotrichales, Erysipelotrichaceae, Solobacterium and Leptotrichia wadei. In addition, Leptotrichia wadei also mediated the association between oral hygiene score and the risk of NPC. Our study confirmed that poor oral hygiene increased the risk of NPC, which was partly mediated by the oral microbiome. These findings might help us to understand the potential mechanism of oral hygiene influencing the risk of NPC via the microbiome.

BACKGROUND: Atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumor (AT/RT) occurs at a younger age and is associated with a worse prognosis than medulloblastoma; however, these two tumor entities are mostly indistinguishable on neuroimaging. The aim of our study was to differentiate AT/RT and medulloblastoma based on their clinical and MRI features to enhance treatment planning and outcome prediction. METHODS: From 2005-2021, we retrospectively enrolled 16 patients with histopathologically diagnosed AT/RT and 57 patients with medulloblastoma at our institute. We evaluated their clinical data and MRI findings, including lesion signals, intratumoral morphologies, and peritumoral/distal involvement. RESULTS: The age of children with AT/RT was younger than that of children with medulloblastoma (2.8 ± 4.9 [0-17] vs. 6.5 ± 4.0 [0-18], p < 0.001), and the overall survival rate was lower (21.4% vs. 66.0%, p = 0.005). Regarding lesion signals on MRI, AT/RT had a lower ADCmin (cutoff value ≤544.7 × 10-6  mm2 /s, p < 0.001), a lower ADC ratio (cutoff value ≤0.705, p < 0.001), and a higher DWI ratio (cutoff value ≥1.595, p < 0.001) than medulloblastoma. Regarding intratumoral morphology, the "tumor central vein sign" was mostly exclusive to medulloblastoma (24/57, 42.1%; AT/RT 1/16, 6.3%; p = 0.007). Regarding peritumoral invasion on T2WI, AT/RT was more prone to invasion of the brainstem (p < 0.001) and middle cerebellar peduncle (p < 0.001) than medulloblastoma. CONCLUSIONS: MRI findings of a lower ADC value, more peritumoral invasion, and absence of the "tumor central vein sign" may be helpful to differentiate AT/RT from medulloblastoma. These distinct MRI findings together with the younger age of AT/RT patients may explain the worse outcomes in AT/RT patients.

The surface properties of a biomaterial play an important role in cell behavior, e.g., recolonization, proliferation, and migration. Collagen is known to favor wound healing. In this study, collagen (COL)-based layer-by-layer (LbL) films were built using different macromolecules as a partner, i.e., tannic acid (TA), a natural polyphenol known to establish hydrogen bonds with protein, heparin (HEP), an anionic polysaccharide, and poly(sodium 4-styrene sulfonate) (PSS), an anionic synthetic polyelectrolyte. To cover the whole surface of the substrate with a minimal number of deposition steps, several parameters of the film buildup were optimized, such as the pH value of the solutions, the dipping time, and the salt (sodium chloride) concentration. The morphology of the films was characterized by atomic force microscopy. Built at an acidic pH, the stability of COL-based LbL films was studied when in contact with a physiological medium as well as the TA release from COL/TA films. In contrast to COL/PSS and COL/HEP LbL films, COL/TA films showed a good proliferation of human fibroblasts. These results validate the choice of TA and COL as components of LbL films for biomedical coatings.

PURPOSE: Pediatric diffuse malignant glioma located in the brainstem was officially named "diffuse midline glioma" (DMG) by the World Health Organization in 2016. For this disease, radical surgery is not beneficial, and the only major treatment strategy is radiotherapy. However, the dose limitations to brainstem tissue mean that treatment by radiotherapy can only control and not eradicate the tumors, and there is no effective treatment for recurrence, resulting in short overall survival of 6-12 months. This paper reports our experience with boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT), a new treatment process, and its efficacy in treating children with recurrent DMG. METHODS: From September 2019 to July 2022, we treated 6 children affected by recurrent DMG. With the collaboration of Taipei Veteran General Hospital (TVGH) and National Tsing-Hua University (NTHU), each patient received two sessions of BNCT within 1 month. RESULTS: Among the six patients, three showed partial response and the rest had stable disease after the treatment. The overall survival and recurrence-free survival duration after treatment were 6.39 and 4.35 months, respectively. None of the patients developed severe side effects, and only one patient developed brain necrosis, which was most likely resulted from previous hypofractionated radiotherapy received. CONCLUSION: BNCT elicited sufficient tumor response with low normal tissue toxicity; it may benefit vulnerable pediatric patients with DMG.

BACKGROUND: Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common primary malignancy of the bone and is notoriously resistant to radiation therapy. High-dose cytotoxic chemotherapy and surgical resection have improved the survival rate and prognosis of patients with OS. Nonetheless, treatment challenges remain when the tumor cannot be removed by surgery. Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) provides high linear energy transfer (LET) radiation, and its internal targeted characteristics make BNCT a novel therapy for removing OS and reducing radiation damage to adjacent healthy tissues. METHODS: In this study, a UMR-106-grafted OS rat model was developed, and boric acid (BA) was used as the boron drug for BNCT. The pharmacokinetics of BA, following intravenous injection, were evaluated to determine the optimal time window for neutron irradiation. OS-bearing rats were irradiated by an epithermal neutron beam at Tsing Hua Open-Pool Reactor (THOR). The therapeutic efficacy of and tissue response after BNCT were evaluated by radiographic and histopathological observations. RESULTS: OS-bearing rats were irradiated by neutrons in the first hour following the intravenous injection of BA. The prescription-absorbed doses in the tumor regions were 5.8 and 11.0 Gy. BNCT reduced the body weight of the tumor-bearing rats, but they recovered after a few days. The BA-mediated BNCT effectively controlled the orthotopic OS tumor, reduced osteolysis, and induced bone healing. Autoradiography and histological analysis confirmed that the BA retention region is consistent with the calcification region in OS tissue. CONCLUSION: BA is specifically retained in OS, and the BA-mediated BNCT can significantly reduce the tumor burden and osteolysis in OS-bearing rats.

Student populations are susceptible to the COVID-19 pandemic and may easy develop mental health problems related to their immaturity of psychological development and fluctuation of mood. However, little has been known about the effects of the pandemic on college students and the associated influencing factors. This study aimed to explore the role of psychological resilience as a mediator between general self-efficacy and mental health. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 480 Chinese college students from 12 universities in Hunan province of China. The participants responded anonymously to the Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES), the Chinese version of the Resilience Scale for College Students (RSCS), and the 12-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12). Hierarchical linear regression and structural equation modeling were used in this study. The average of GSES and RSCS scores of college students were 25.00 ± 4.68 and 137.97 ± 15.50, which were at a medium level. The average score for the GHQ-12 was 1.59 ± 1.59, and 22.03% of the college students scored ≥ 3 on the GHQ-12, indicating that they were at risk of developing mental disorders. According to the analyses of mediation effect, psychological resilience played a fully mediating role in the relationship between general self-efficacy and mental health. In conclusion, Chinese college students were at high risk of developing mental disorders during the COVID-19 period. General self-efficacy was positively associated with psychological resilience, and psychological resilience played a fully mediating role in the relationship between general self-efficacy and mental health. Future studies and interventions should aim to promote psychological resilience and general self-efficacy.

PURPOSE: Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT), an attractive strategy for cancer treatment, can kill tumor cells and avoid injury to surrounding healthy cells. 4-Borono-2-[18F]fluorophenylalanine ([18F]FBPA) positron emission tomography (PET) is a reliable tool for patient screening. Due to the relatively low radiochemical yield when employing the electrophilic route, this study was able to develop a new method to produce no-carrier-added (NCA) [18F]FBPA and compare the biological characteristics with carrier-added (CA) characteristics. PROCEDURES: By starting from 4-bromo-2-nitrobenzaldehyde, NCA [18F]FBPA was prepared using radiofluorination, alkylation, borylation, and hydrolysis. Cellular uptake analyses, microPET imaging, and biodistribution analyses were conducted to characterize the biological properties of NCA and CA [18F]FBPA. RESULTS: The radiochemical yield of NCA [18F]FBPA was 20 % ± 6 % (decay corrected) with a radiochemical purity of >98 % and molar activity of 56 ± 15 GBq/µmol in a 100-min synthesis. The in vitro accumulation was significantly higher for NCA [18F]FBPA than for CA [18F]FBPA in both SAS and CT-26 cells. However, no apparent differences in tumor uptake were observed between NCA and CA [18F]FBPA-injected tumor-bearing mice. CONCLUSIONS: We successfully prepared NCA [18F]FBPA through nucleophilic substitution and achieved improved radiochemical yield and purity. We also demonstrated the effects of the amount of nonradioactive FBPA on in vitro cellular uptake and in vivo imaging studies.
